5 Reasons to Control and Reduce Sugar Intake

Posted by yhk on Dec 30, 2008

What’s life without some sugar in it? You probably have never imagined one. Sugar is a major ingredient to many modern food items (candy, soft drinks, sugarice cream; to name a few). Personally, I love sweets (non sugar free) and cant think of a diet without this sweet substance. I remember eating raw sugar everyday, when I was a kid. For many, its one of those things that make life worth living. The little quantity of dessert you so anxiously wait to eat after a meal, can make your day. At least for me, life without sugar is like the internet without Google.

However, there are a few major reasons why we should control our sugar intake. I’ve listed them below.

1.) Increased risk of Diabetes

While it cannot be said that sugar causes diabetes, it is well known that high sugar levels can cause your body to become insulin resistant. This may lead to diabetes.

2.) It feeds cancer cells

Cancer cells in a human body meet their energy requirements through blood sugar. The logic is simple: the more sugar you eat, the more you feed cancer cells, giving them the energy to multiply rapidly.

3.) Obesity

One of the major causes of the obesity epidemic today is sugar. As I said earlier, modern foodstuff contains loads of sugar. This is way more than the human body needs, and therefore, the excess energy is stored as fat. Not only will you look fat and ugly, but you will also increase the risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

4.) Tooth Decay

Eating raw sugar during my childhood did have a flip side to it. I had tooth decay in almost all the milk teeth that I had. The visit to the dentists were painful, so I had to stop eating it raw and start brushing more regularly. As you understand by now, eating sugar (coupled with not brushing properly) can cause tooth decay. The bacteria present in our teeth convert sugar into lactic acid during metabolism. Excess of acid causes tooth decay.

Tooth drilling and filling is painful. Brush your teeth regularly to avoid decay :)

5.) Hyperactivity in Children

In children, excess sugar consumption can cause hyperactivity. Does your bundle of joy eat a lot of sugar rich stuff? No wonder its a tough job taming the kid! Parents tend to feed their toddlers with sweetened food, thinking that they wont eat otherwise. It is true that kids would prefer chocolate milk with sugar to plain milk. But we must know the ‘how much’ factor to it as well. Controlling and restricting the amount of sugar is the key, and not cutting it out altogether. The result: a well behaved and tamed little critter.

The list to the reasons doesn’t end here. I’ve only touched a few major ones.
