4 Reasons To Eat An Apple Everyday

Posted by yhk on Jan 13, 2009

Everyone has heard of the phrase – ‘An Apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ I have a vague memory of a vampire in a cartoon eating an apple and applesuggesting it keeps the dentist away. Anyways, these saying are indeed true and have scientific evidence to back them.

1.) Apples Contain Antioxidants

Antioxidants are a molecular substance that reduces oxidation in other molecules. The type of antioxidant found in apples is called Quercetin. A kilogram of apples contain 400 milligrams (mg) of Quercetin. So what do antioxidants do? For one thing, they help in preventing cancers in the human body. Antioxidants are also used for the treatment mental ailments where the brain has had an oxidative injury. They also negate the effects and damage caused by free radicals.

2.) Apples are Fiber Rich

An Apple, its skin in particular, is fiber rich. Fiber rich foods improve and help your digestive system. Such foods also satisfy you with lesser quantities of consumption. It is well established that fiber in food helps reduce cholesterol levels in your blood stream. Moreover, it also helps in reducing blood sugar levels, thus making it ideal for diabetics.

Tip: Don’t throw the skin away. Its the healthiest part in an apple. Prefer eating apples instead of drinking apple juice.

3.) Apples Contain Lots of Iron

Apples contain lots of iron that will help the human body boost the production of Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin helps in delivering nutrition and oxygen to all body parts through blood. Pregnant women and people who donate blood need iron to rebuild their low levels of hemoglobin.

4.) Eating Apples Equals Whiter Teeth

Apples are slightly acidic in nature. This combined with the fiber from its skin works as a natural tooth cleansing system. Just rinse your mouth with water after eating one for clean and bright teeth. :D

Bonus Reason: Apples are Tasty

The best reason to eat apples is that they taste good. There is an inverse relationship between how something tastes and how good it is for your health. Most of the food stuff in this world that is good for your health tastes bad. Apples are an exception. So enjoy this delicious fruit without the worry of ruining your health.

Happy eating!

Thanks for the great post! Apples are indeed almost like a miracle food (in fact some health experts claim that they are). More than just a dental marketing idea using vampires, an apple a day could certainly keep the doctor away (or at least prevent a variety of common, everyday ailments).
