8 Reasons To Buy A Nintendo Wii
Posted by yhk on Jan 21, 2009
I wanted to buy a Wii ever since it debuted. In my country, it is not officially launched yet, so its not easily available. Around a year ago, a few sellers had Japanese consoles they were offering, but I decided to wait until I get my hands on an English one. Finally, last week, someone was selling
one at work. A 4 month old US console with an Indian Adapter, extra controller, Wii Play, Nyko rechargeable batteries and charger. The price was a steal! After playing my first game, I knew I made the right choice. This is way better than buying an Xbox 360 or a PS3. Below, are my reasons why you should consider buying the Nintendo Wii as your choice for this generation.
1) Its Fun
All video games are fun. Then why include this as a reason, and the top reason at that? The Wii redefines what video gaming fun is. We’ve purchased many consoles in the past, but I’ve never ever seen my entire family have so much fun playing any other console. I have not purchased any games yet, and am only playing ‘Wii Sports’ at the moment. All the games in ‘Wii Sports’ are fun, especially Tennis.
2) Its Different
Its not about pushing buttons or who pushes faster. Its about how well you can time your body movements. You don’t need to spend hours mastering or learning how to play. You just take the Wiimote in your hand and swing it naturally as you would in real. This makes the experience a lot different from the other gaming platforms.
3) Its Innovative
Nintendo realized, unlike the other companies, that pumping power into a console is not the way to stand out. Its not innovative but just using brute force. They made that mistake in the last generation of consoles. The GameCube was the most powerful of the three major consoles. The others being the PS2 and the Xbox. The sheer power did not imply success and sales. The Wii is the least powerful of the three major consoles for this generation, but is undoubtedly the most successful. It is the innovation that has attracted non-hardcore gamers to buying the Wii.
4) Its Immersive
Like I said before, its not pushing buttons but swinging your controller around, and the character in the game replicates your moves. For example: if its a sword game, you move it like a sword. When you move it around, you can hear the “swoosh” sound from within the controller and it vibrates when you hit something.
5) Physical Activity
Video gaming is generally considered to be a low on physical activity. You just sit there an push a few buttons. With the arrival of the Wii, perceptions have changed. Playing the Wii can actually help you reduce weight. Playing a few tennis games back to back can make you sweat. Although it is not a substitute to regular and supervised exercise, it sure can burn a few extra calories for you.
6) You don’t need an HDTV
The best part is, you don’t need an HDTV. An HDTV is considered a luxury, in my country. Buying one just for the sake of a video game is considered madness. I already have a standard definition TV (SDTV) and the Wii works just fine. The bottom line is — no HDTV required = you save money.
7) Least Expensive
Talking about money, it is also the least expensive console. You get loads of fun at a very low price. Unlike other consoles, you don’t have to dent your wallet to get this piece of technology. In the US, it launched with a price tag of $250. Compare that to the PS3 whose basic model launched at $499.
Backwards Compatible
It is also compatible with GameCube games and you can hook GameCube controllers into the Wii. It even has memory slots for the GameCube. This is amazing for those who already own a GameCube. They can sell their GameCube and buy a Wii, and still retain their old GameCube game collection.

To conclude, I will definitely encourage you to buy the Wii. Its worth every penny!
